Using the Insert Element Feature

The "Insert Element" option is a versatile feature in Software Ideas Modeler, accessible through the toolbox. This tutorial explains how to use it in different contexts within the diagram editor.

Accessing the Insert Element Option

1. Locate the Toolbox: The toolbox contains various tools you can use in your diagram. Find the specific tool you want to work with.

2. Open Context Menu: Right-click on the tool button in the toolbox. This action opens a context menu.

3. Select 'Insert Element': From the context menu, choose the "Insert Element" option.

Behavior Based on Context

The "Insert Element" feature behaves differently based on what is currently selected in the diagram editor.

Scenario 1: No Selection

Default Position and Size: If nothing is selected in the diagram editor, using "Insert Element" will add the element to the diagram at a default position and with a default size.

Scenario 2: Selected Elements

Container Element: If you use "Insert Element" for a container element (like a group box or a frame) while having multiple elements selected:

  • The new container will encompass all selected elements.
  • The selected elements will be added inside this newly created container.

Non-Container Element: If you use "Insert Element" for a non-container element (like a shape or an icon) while having multiple elements selected:

  • The new element will be inserted in such a way that it covers all the selected elements.

Connector: If you use "Insert Element" for a connector (like a line or an arrow) while having multiple elements selected:

  • The connector will be inserted to link the active element (indicated by a hatched selection outline) with the other selected elements.
