Mr,

Just let you know that it is one of the best UML tools. Keep up the good work!

Although I am a hobbyist I will pay for it for commercial use, when some features will be added (for example indicate of static attributes, etc.)

RE: Mr,

Thank you!

I appreciate any suggestion. If you have got some others, you can send them to me by e-mail or you can post them here.

Mr.

I initially installed Software Ideas Modeller on my machine for commercial use. The 10 day trial is over and I now want to use it for private use. I tried uninstalling and re-downloading and re-installing the software but when I try to open up the newly installed version, it still says my 10 day licence is over and I must pay to keep using the software for commercial use.

How do I go about now using the software for non-commercial purposes?

Thanks

RE: Mr.

You have to delete the local settings for Software Ideas Modeler, which you can find (by default) in C:\Users\{Your_User_Name}\AppData\Local\Dušan_Rodina\SoftwareIdeasModeler.exe_*

Why you do not open sources under GPL3 license?

This project could become "The Best" if you open sources.

1. community will help you in development

2. you will have MUCH more users

3. community might try port it to Mono under other systems.

4. user will not fear that the project one day can become fully commercial.

5. with open source you will get more donations. (I donate only to open source projects, and IMHO I'm not alone)

With closed sources and without availability to use it for commercial purposes the project becomes "One of the many" and sure not the best.

Think of it,

Albert

RE:

Firstly I want to say that I respect your opinions.

There is a lot of projects, where open source approach works and it works well. But there is also a lot of examples, where it caused problems.

Depending on what I know, the successful projects as Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, Linux, etc. have sponsors which fund the core development and developers. I think it would be problem to find such sponsors or another source of finance for Software Ideas Modeler.

I have made several investigations about open-source donationwares, which include similar software and software from completely different category but with 20-50x more users. The published sum of donations of these softwares (with a wider user base than SIM) is not sufficient for full time development.

There is also an option to do this project only as hobby, but this would radically reduce the dedicated time for it.

When one is a student, it can be fun to develop tens of hours a week on meaningful project for free, but later one finds it is not possible to work so much besides the full-time job. So the project has to be not only meaningful, not only fun, but also has to be paid (at least to cover monthly expenses of developer).

P.S. I am considering some kind of shared code license, which would allow to share source codes with companies, which purchase the license.

Generate C# code from ERD

I have an Entity Relation Diagram and need to generate C# code for each entity. But when I selected the entity, C#, and the output directory, then clicked Generate button, nothing was generated. Can you help?

Thanks,

version 4.102

RE: Generate C# code from ERD

In this version, templates for C# don't support the code generation from ER diagrams. I will add the support for them in the next version. Meanwhile you can use Diagram/Convert To/Class Diagram and generate the code from class diagram.

Transition ?

Dušan

Love the tool -> thanks for the hard work on it. Two questions please.

1. I have 2 states that transition between each other. Typically, I draw these in 2 separate transition lines. Its just the way I am used to seeing it. Your SDM wants to draw 1 line and show both transitions that way. Can you show in 2 separate lines?

2. How can I have a transition from a given state to it's self? Typically this is shown in a curved line that exits and returns to said state.

RE: Transition ?

You're welcome.

1. Draw the first transition. Adjust positions of its start and end point. Draw the second transition. (In the next major version, I plan to add auto-adjusting of transitions to not overlap.)

2. Start to draw the transition on state and move slightly the cursor so that it doesn't leave the bounds of states.

Here is the practical demonstration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g70AqMIcDo0

Very nice - thanks again.

Dr

Your latest versions are really great! I feel that I am only using a small part of what is available in the program. I wondered if you could set up a downloadable video which would explain the uses of the various types of diagram available.

RE: Dr

Thank you! It's a good idea. I'll start to work on videos as soon as possible. Currently I focus mainly on completion of new major version 5, which I want to release this year.

Until then, I recommend to look at: http://www.softwareideas.net/SimUserGuide.pdf

How to add substate

Hi,

I have added a composite state machine in the diagram. But I am unable to figure out ways to add the substate.

The user guide does not give any pointers.

Can someone help?

RE: How to add substate

Thanks,

the youtube video helped. I would suggest to convert the user guide to youtube videos.

RE: How to add substate

Thanks, it worked.

Youtube is a good way to "document" user manual

RE: How to add substate

Thanks,

It worked, also youtube is a good medium to "document" the user manual

Thank you for tip. I'll gradually add new videos with tutorials.
